About the book

Aus der Rumpelkammer (The Lumber Room) by Peter Svetina combines longish and short tales, short stories about people and things, and poems and miniature texts in which he plays with language, sometimes approaching nonsense literature. The different literary types, genres and forms are moved in an intentionally unruly order and rhythm, meaning that the author does away with horizons of exception. Each new text is, thus, a veritable surprise for the reader. For example, after a tremendous build-up in one of the long tales, we can catch our breath as we read the subsequent poem, before, just moments later, enjoying the author’s characteristic wit or simply reveling in the sounds of his verbal acrobatics. The illustrations by Damijan Stepančič provide additional surprises as he illustrates each text and highlights the different text types in this unique book.

About the author

Peter Svetina

Peter Svetina (born 1970 in Ljubljana, Slovenia) is a writer, poet, translator and literary historian. His literary debut was a picture book, O mrožku, ki si ni hotel strici nohtov (The Walrus Who Didn’t Want to Cut His Nails, 1999), which soon served as the basis for a puppet play. He writes for children as well as for young adults and his works include some twenty children’s books, poetry collections, and youth novels and thrillers. He also writes scholarly texts on Old Slovenian poetry, as well as on youth literature and detective novels. He translates from English, Czech, German and Croatian into Slovenian. Peter Svetina has received several awards. For Ropotarna (The Lumber Room, 2012) he received his third Večernica Award for the best youth and children’s book written in the past year. Peter Svetina has also received the Slovenian Book Fair Prize for the best first work, recognition from the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) for the best picture book, and several awards from the Ljubljana City Library.

About the translators

Liza Linde

Liza Linde (born 1989 in Reutlingen, Germany) lives in Ljubljana and works as a translator for German, Slovenian and English. She translates both prose and poetry and numerous other texts in the fields of culture and politics. Her literary translations include works by Goran Vojnović, Nicolas Mahler, Anja Golob, Nataša Kramberger, Peter Svetina, David Krančan & Žiga X Gombač, Jela Krečič, Tadej Golob, Glorjana Veber, Bronja Žakelj and Eva Mahkovic.

Jens Sakelšek

Jens Sakelšek (born 1990 in Wipperfürth, Germany) completed his MA in Conference Interpreting in German, Slovenian and Italian in 2019 at the Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz; his master’s thesis was on the specific difficulties blind and severely visually impaired simultaneous interpreters face and how they cope with them. He lives and works as a (literary) translator and interpreter between Germany, Slovenia, Italy and Austria. His translations includes works by Eva Markun, Veronika Simoniti, Boris Pahor and Jurij Černič.
